Aurora Noon Lions gives its distinguished service award

Arvid Meyer of Aurora received the Aurora Noon Lions Club's distinguished service award for 2012-2013 March 27 at Bally Doyle restaurant in Aurora.

Michele Needham of Plainfield, Noon Lions scholarship and service awards chairman, presented Meyer's surprise award. Jerry Spirk of Sugar Grove, club president, presided.

"The individual we are recognizing this evening joined our club in January 2007," Needham said in a news release. "Although he hasn't been in the club for as many years as some members, this individual has provided more service than his seven years might convey.

"This individual began working on the philanthropy committee almost immediately. He was mentored by former committee chairman the late Dr. Martin McKenna of North Aurora.

"Under Dr. McKenna's tutelage, our award winner reviewed requests for eye glasses and eye exams, and basically learned the ropes to assume leadership of the philanthropy committee.

"Additionally, this individual has been an integral part of the club's famous garage sales. He practically single-handedly priced each and every item for sale.

"We are so very grateful to have a member such as this and very proud to name Arvid Meyer as the 2012-2013 Distinguished Service Award recipient," Needham said.

Meyer is the 58th recipient of the award since its inception in 1956.

The Five Inspirations, a vocal group including Noon Lion Joe Beary of Aurora, provided after-dinner entertainment.
