Aurora Historical Society seeks baseball, softball memorabilia

Baseball and softball memorabilia are being sought for a new exhibit at the Aurora Historical Society.

Titled "Play Ball, Aurora!" the exhibit will open May 23. It will trace the development of the two sports in Aurora from the Civil War period, when returning soldiers introduced the game of baseball that they had learned from their eastern counterparts, to today.

Pictures, uniforms, gear, trophies, programs, video and other artifacts of significance from either baseball or softball teams in Aurora are needed to round out the society's own collection.

If possible, individuals willing to loan or donate memorabilia should provide preview photographs and descriptions of the items to the historical society prior to the deadline of Friday, April 18.

Such photos can be emailed to ahs@aurorahistory.net or mailed to AHS, P.O. Box 905, Aurora, IL 60507. Preview photos also can be dropped off at the Museum Store in the Pierce Art and History Center, 20 E. Downer Place, during regular hours, noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday to Friday. Please do not provide the actual materials, just photographs.

Alternatively, items may be described by leaving a message at (630) 906-0650. The historical society will contact potential donors about pieces that seem the most suitable.

"Play Ball, Aurora!" will open with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 23, at the Aurora Historical Society at the Pierce Center, 20 E. Downer Place. Exhibit hours will be noon to 4 p.m. Wednesdays to Saturdays through Sept. 13. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.
