Hanover Township to hold 5K in Elgin

Hanover Township will hold its first 5K run-walk on May 3 to raise funds for a new program that links residents with medical and dental services.

"Unfortunately there are a growing number of our neighbors needing help in receiving medical and dental assistance they just can't afford," Community Health Director Kristen Smith said in a statement. "This is a great opportunity for residents to get outdoors and be active while supporting a worthwhile cause."

The 5K will step off 8 a.m. at the Izaak Walton Center, 899 Jay St., Elgin. The roughly 3-mile course weaves through parts of Elgin, east of Liberty Street and south of Villa Street. For a list of road closures, visit Sprint2spring.com.

Race fees are $25 until April 19, $30 through April 30, and $35 on race day. Proceeds will go to the Hanover Township Foundation.

After the 5K, the township will give a tour of the Izaak Walton Center, a renovated facility that opened earlier this year. Food and games for kids also will be provided.

"With our new office in Elgin, the township is in the perfect location to be providing services directly in the community," Supervisor Brian McGuire said in a statement.

"I encourage many of our neighbors to attend the community open house and learn more about the township and our plans for improving the property."
