Illinois State Police on Tuesday identified a 36-year-old Chicago man as the driver in a single-vehicle crash in Palatine early Sunday that sent him and a passenger to a hospital.

Leon Shields was charged with driving under the influence and ticketed for speeding and improper lane use after the crash, which occurred about 1:36 a.m. Sunday on northbound Route 53 near the Rand Road exit, state police said.
