Algonquin helps residents declutter

April is the month for spring cleaning in Algonquin, so if you've got a pile of furniture, grills, old clothes and toys, now's your chance to purge.

The village is offering a cleanup program for single-family homes and townhouses that receive residential refuse and recycling services.

The program is meant to encourage residents to reduce fire hazards in their homes and to spruce up their neighborhoods, according to a news release.

You won't need a sticker for this collection.

Items that won't be collected include white goods, construction materials, landscape waste and auto parts.

Everything must be out on the curb by 7 a.m. on your cleanup date - all of which are on a Saturday.

Those dates are:

• April 5 for the east side;

• April 12 for the center of the village;

• April 19 for the west side.

Spotlight on student art: The Algonquin Public Arts Commission's third-annual Student Art Exhibit is running now through April 14 at the Algonquin Public Library District, 2600 Harnish Drive.

The free exhibit features more than 60 pieces of work local middle school students created using a variety of mediums.

The middle schools represented at the exhibit are Algonquin Middle School, St. John's Lutheran School, St. Margaret Mary Catholic School and Westfield Community School.

The village partnered with the library for this year's show.

The library's regular hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m.to 5 p.m. Saturday; and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
