O'Hare service opening Sunday on Blue Line
After nearly a week of shuttles between the CTA Blue Line's O'Hare and Rosemont stations, service will resume at about 2 p.m. Sunday following a bizarre crash last week.
The lead car of an eight-car CTA train hit a rubber bumper at the end of the track at the O'Hare Station at 2:50 a.m. March 24 and pirouetted into an escalator, injuring 32 people. O'Hare Station has been closed since the accident.
"CTA personnel have worked around the clock in recent days to repair the O'Hare Blue Line station," CTA officials said in a statement. "Until tomorrow afternoon, the CTA will continue to operate shuttle bus service between the O'Hare and Rosemont Blue Line stations. Blue Line service continues to run its normal schedule between Rosemont and Forest Park."
The operator of the train later admitted to National Transportation Safety Board investigators she had dozed off while on the job.
But union officials have said she was working significant overtime and didn't have a fixed schedule, which could have led to her fatigue.
This is not the first time the driver has slept while on duty, the NTSB told reporters at a briefing last week.
Damage to equipment alone at the station is estimated at $6 million.
