Stevenson's win is Heffernan's first

Katy Karabetsos scored in the 23rd minute directly off a corner kick in the first half, as Stevenson's girls soccer team edged Maine South 1-0 for Kevin Heffernan's first win as the Patriots' head coach.

"Your first victory as a head coach is one you will never forget," Heffernan said.

Stevenson keeper Sophia Godoy had 3 saves to earn her first blank sheet.

"Maine South is a tough opponent," Heffernan said. "They work hard every minute. You cannot take a play off the entire game."

Maine South had a goal called back due to an offside call late in the game as they were pushing to equalize.

"Sometimes you get a bit lucky," Heffernan said. "Today was one of those games. I'm so proud of this team. They bounced back after a tough loss to a strong New Trier the night before. We will build upon the strong effort we put in today."
