Late goals lift Dundee-Crown over Streamwood
The Dundee-Crown girls soccer team spent no time outside preparing for the season.
The lack of time outside certainly didn't hurt the offensive players for the Chargers. The defense could use a little work, but it was good enough Tuesday night.
Heily Ramirez and Ashley Raby each scored in the final 4 minutes as D-C rallied past Streamwood for a 5-4 season-opening victory at Millennium Field.
"It was a lot different working with the bigger space," Raby said of actually playing a game instead of practicing in the field house at D-C. "Everyone really worked hard and everything we worked on practice came out in the game."
Streamwood's Tawny Carroll broke a 3-3 tie with her third goal of the game with 7:03 remaining in the second half.
The Chargers, who rallied from a 3-1 deficit to tie the game at 3-3, got the tying goal with 3:43 remaining as Ramirez got a touch on a Carson Bloch pass and got the ball past Sabres' goalkeeper Nathalie Guindon, who finished with 5 saves.
Raby completed her hat trick with the game-winning goal with 1:38 to go. The junior took a feed from Franki Scarpelli and scored with a left-footed shot from about 15 yards out.
"What I was really impressed with was our offensive ability," Chargers coach Sebastian Falinski said. "It's been a while since we scored five goals or even had the opportunity."
Raby gave the Chargers a 1-0 lead with 26:50 remaining in the first half off an assist from Scarpelli.
Carroll scored directly off a corner kick 2 minutes later to tie the game. Off another corner kick, Karina Nevarez scored off Carroll's cross for a 2-1 Streamwood lead with 18:46 to go in the first half. Carroll made it 3-1 with 9:54 left before halftime.
"It's the first game and good to get the jitters out of the way," Sabres coach Matt Polovin said. "Tawny is going to be a player to watch this year. She already started off the season with three goals. Defensively, we need to work on some things."
Raby scored with 1:06 remaining in the first half to get D-C within 3-2 at halftime. Ramirez tied the game at 3-3 with 26:40 to go.
Isabel Miranda made 1 save and Anahi Medina had 3 for the Chargers.
