Era of concealed carry is scary

I've always been of the opinion that people who have guns kill people - with those guns.

Statistics show that the United States has so many more guns than other countries and we certainly use them. Hearing a body count from Chicago each weekend is heartbreaking, since many of these deaths are children.

We are now bracing for a new era in gun rights in Illinois where people will be able to carry a firearm tucked in a holster or purse because of concealed carry. I find that very scary.

Our understaffed police departments will have to go through thousands of applications for licenses to try and weed out those with mental health issues, criminal records, or domestic violence or orders of protection. Police departments don't want criminals having guns so they have to do a background check. Too bad we can't do background checks for all guns, not just for concealed carry.

Ninety percent of all Americans strongly support background checks and that includes 82 percent of gun owners and 74 percent of NRA members.

We can't forget the importance of gun violence prevention.
