Former Chicago man sentenced in absentia to start serving term
A former Chicago man sentenced in absentia for bilking a female acquaintance out of $93,000 has been arrested after years on the lam and will begin serving his 10-year prison term.
The DuPage County state's attorney office says 48-year-old Angelo Pesce (PEY'-shee) pleaded guilty to theft by deception in 2006, but didn't appear for sentencing. A judge eventually sentenced him anyway.
Prosecutors say Pesce barrowed $93,000 in 2005 by telling the Aurora woman he was a commodities trader with assets temporarily frozen. He promised to pay her back, but never did.
Pesce was detained in Detroit last week and DuPage County officials took him into custody Monday.
There's no public telephone listing for an Angelo Pesce in Chicago or Detroit. Tuesday's statement from prosecutors didn't mention an attorney for Pesce.
