Duckworth, federal officials won't visit Paralympic Games
The delegation of federal government officials led by U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth that was planning to go Sochi, Russia, for the Paralympic Games won't be making the trip, Duckworth said.
The move is a response to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and it won't so far affect the American athletes planning to compete in the games that are set to start Friday. Some athletes are already there.
“I remain appalled by the immoral and illegal actions of the Russian government and believe that there must be consequences for its behavior,” the Hoffman Estates Democrat said in a statement. “The international community must stand together to support the sovereignty of the Ukraine and end the suffering of its people.”
Duckworth was set to leave Wednesday for the Friday opening ceremonies.
“The Paralympic Games are an inspiration to millions of disabled people around the globe and it is tragic that the reckless actions of the Russian government are jeopardizing them,” Duckworth said. “Still, these brave Paralympians have shown tremendous perseverance throughout their entire lives and I know they will make all Americans proud in Sochi.”
