Buffalo Grove Boy Scout troop celebrates 57 years

More than 200 supporters - some of whom came in from out of state - recently celebrated the golden anniversary of Troop 140 out of Buffalo Grove. Scouts, family, alumni and supporters packed the gymnasium at St. Mary Catholic Church for the event.

There was much to celebrate. Since its beginnings in 1957, the troop has grown and has a reputation as an active organization that frequently makes high adventure trips everywhere from Florida to Alaska. The troop currently includes nearly 100 Scouts. More than 160 Scouts from Troop 140 have attained Eagle Scout status in its history.

The idea for the celebration came after the troop's Scoutmaster Tim Meinholz met one of the original scoutmasters, Edward Jost, who served from 1960 to 1962.

The troop's committee later researched records from the Northwest Suburban Council and found the names of every scoutmaster back to 1957. Further research helped the troop get in contact with many of those scoutmasters.

Thirteen of the 27 scoutmasters from Troop 140's history came to the event. Relatives of two other scoutmasters came to represent them.

The troop interviewed many of those scoutmasters, including Ed Jost, and compiled the footage in a video that highlighted the history of the troop in Buffalo Grove.

Photos and Boy Scout memorabilia were on display for attendees to look at the troop's accomplishments. The troop also looked forward with an awards ceremony and Court of Honor.

Special guests at the event included former U.S. Rep. Bob Dold, who is an Eagle Scout and serves as a scoutmaster in a local troop.

Boy Scout Troop 140 in Buffalo Grove recently celebrated its 57th anniversary at a Court of Honor event. Scoutmasters from the past five decades were recognized.
