The third annual ICompete Wine Tasting Fundraiser will be from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20, at Pop's Bar and Grill, 19 N. Bothwell St., Palatine. Proceeds from the event will benefit ICompete Youth Programs.

Tickets are $20 per person for tastings, pizza and wings. The event, for those 21 and older, will also include raffle prizes and a 50/50 raffle. To purchase tickets, or for information, contact Cristina Lara at (847) 496-6305 or clara@palatineparks.org.

ICompete is a collaborative partnership with the Palatine Park District, Palatine Opportunity Center, Palatine High School, District 15, Palatine Police Department, Palatine Township, and Buehler YMCA. Each partner provides a unique and integral part in the development, implementation, funding and support of each program. ICompete programs include the after-school club, summer athletic clinics, special events, swim program, teen nights, summer camp, the Pirate Passport program, and more.

The mission of ICompete is to introduce underserved families to athletics, arts and academics by breaking down the barriers of access to better prepare for life experiences. The goal of the program is to stimulate interest, provide academic support and increase opportunities to participate in organized sports, clubs or community programs.

"ICompete has touched the lives of thousands of children and families in the Palatine community over the last eight years," said Cristina Lara, Community Outreach coordinator at Palatine Park District. "It has been amazing to see so many young people grow though the program. I have seen many participants who have come back to visit, who have become involved in Palatine High School sports and activities, and who have gone on to graduate from high school and college. Some have even returned to work for the program as paid staff members. I look forward to many more children participating in ICompete."

Lara added, "ICompete programs allow participants to develop the skills to make safe choices, get involved in their school and community, and learn how to be competitive in this complex world. Proceeds from the annual Wine Tasting Fundraiser allow us to achieve these goals."

ICompete is a partner of Palatine Park District. The mission of Palatine Park District is to provide a variety of safe, enjoyable and affordable parks and recreation facilities and activities that will enhance the quality of life by promoting good health and well-being for all residents and visitors of the Palatine Park District.
