Gurnee set to honor Welton

Former Gurnee Mayor Richard Welton will be the focus of today's village board meeting. Village board trustees will be asked to vote for a resolution placing Welton's name on a 1-acre site on Old Grand Avenue. Mayor Kristina Kovarik recommends the property become Richard A. Welton Village Plaza, where Gurnee's history would be noted in bronze markers. The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. at village hall, 325 N. O'Plaine Road. At 28 years, Welton was Gurnee's longest-serving mayor until he lost to Donald Rudny in 2001. Welton said he plans to attend the meeting.
