Hoffman Ests. couple loses $5,000 in DUI scam

A Hoffman Estates couple was scammed out of $5,000 Feb. 11 after they received a phone call from a man claiming to be an attorney, police said.

He told them their grandson had been arrested on charges of driving under the influence and needed the money to make bail. The victims purchased 10 $500 Green Dot Money Pak prepaid cards from a CVS pharmacy, called the phone number the man had given them and supplied him with the card numbers. He told them he would call back within 24 hours, but he did not call.

They became suspicious and contacted their grandson, who told them he was OK, according to police reports.
