IC Catholic wins with team effort

Of the 23 field goals the IC Catholic girls basketball team made in Wednesday's 52-26 in the Class 2A IC Catholic regional semifinals, they dished 17 assists.

The high assist-to-field goal ratio was no accident.

"In practice we do a lot of different looks, creativity," IC senior Abby Radoha said. "That's what we do. We work as a team. It's not just one individual.

"I personally love getting assists. That's my favorite. ... And we work on it a lot in practice."

The Knights (21-6) shared the scoring also. Junior Chiara Gaudio led the team with 9 points, senior Grace Vitek had 8 and Radoha, Rory Manion and Erin Maloney each scored 7 points.

"We're really balanced," Radoha said. "Sometimes someone has an off game, but we're all pretty much balanced."

"Overall the best thing about what we have going on is we don't have any issues," IC coach Aubree Schuett added. "We all enjoy one another's company. They're all friends, on and off the court, and for 11 high school girls to do that is just a testament to their character."

The Knights led nearly start to finish, taking a 15-6 lead after the first quarter, 33-10 at halftime.

Manion, who scored 20 points the last time these teams met, responded to the Broncos' defensive focus by leading the Knights with 8 rebounds and 6 assists.

"It was a good team effort," Schuett said.

Senior Dana Turner led Walther Christian (6-19) with 20 of the Broncos' 26 points.
