Enter cornbread, muffin challenge in East Dundee

The village of East Dundee will be hosting a complimentary Community Corn Boil and Cornified Challenge at 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, during the farmers market.

With the popularity of the "Community Pig-Nic and BBQ Throwdown" and last month's "Macho Nacho Throwdown," coordinator Jeff Turner, owner of In The Neighborhood Meet Market, wanted to keep the competitions in East Dundee rolling each month.

This Sunday, the farmers will trade in their hats and become judges for the Cornified Corn Bread or Corn Muffin Challenge. Turner will once again be emceeing the event.

"The last two months drew such a crowd from the community we wanted to continue an event that would include the vendors of the farmers market and the community," Turner said.

"The winning entry will not only get bragging rights, but a $100 donation will go to their charity of choice. It could be a church, a school or any 501(c)3 organization."

The challenge is open to anyone. Entrants can enter cornbread, corn muffins or both. All food entries must be received no later than 9 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, to be included in the judging.

Those wanting to enter the contest may apply online at www.eastdundee.net/communitycalendar, or stop by The Depot or The Meet Market to complete an application. Application deadline is 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23.

After the judging, the community is welcome to come for complimentary corn on the cob, hot dogs and watermelon, while supplies last.

"It's just a great way to spend a late Sunday morning with friends, family and neighbors. As a volunteer, it's fun to see everyone come out for something like this," said East Dundee resident John Brewer.
