Forum to discuss Syria
The Fox Valley Citizens for Peace & Justice will host “Syria: the Three-Sided Civil War, International Solidarity, and the Peace Movement” from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at Highland Avenue Church of the Brethren, 783 W. Highland Ave. in Elgin.
The forum will feature Nader Hashemi and Danny Postel of the University of Denver Center for Middle East Studies and co-editors of a new book about the country, “The Syria Dilemma.”
Admission is free. Voluntary donations will be donated to humanitarian aid in Syria. The forum will be co-sponsored by Fox Valley Citizens for Peace and Justice and the University of Denver Center for Middle East Studies.
Nader Hashemi is director of the University of Denver Center for Middle East Studies and associate professor of Middle East & Islamic Politics at the University of Denver’s Josef Korbel School of International Studies.
Danny Postel is associate director of the University of Denver Center for Middle East Studies. He is contributing editor of “Logos: A Journal of Modern Society,” and also blogs for Critical Inquiry, Truthout, and Huffington Post.
Nader Hashemi and Danny Postel are co-editors of the anthology “The Syria Dilemma” (MIT Press 2013), copies of which will be available for sale at the event.
There will be opening presentations of 10-15 minutes by each of the panelists followed by questions and comments from the audience. The forum will be moderated by Mary Shesgreen. For information, call (847) 742-6602.
