Dist. 211 students learn about careers in foreign service

Students at Fremd and Palatine high schools learned a bit about politics and future career paths from the U.S. Department of State’s Diplomat in Residence for the Midwest: Ambassador Ian Kelly.

Through the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, Kelly was invited to the high schools to educate students about career opportunities in the U.S. Foreign Service, as well as the U.S. Department of State.

“He was a great speaker, the kids had a lot of questions, and it was a great opportunity for the students to be in the presence of a diplomat,” said Jan Brottman, career adviser at Fremd High School. “Students were very engaged and Kelly was great with interacting with them.”

Various students, including from the Model UN Club, had the opportunity to not only learn about careers, but also asking political questions, such as Kelly’s thoughts about issues in Benghazi.

He also told students that learning a language is a great tool to have while young and entering the workforce even though the U.S. Department of State will educate individuals in languages. He also discussed different career tracks to get into the U.S. Department of State.

Brottman said she was thrilled Kelly was able to speak with the students and offer great advice. He also gave his contact information to the students in case they had more questions after he left.

“To provide an opportunity like this for the kids and maybe make a difference in one student’s life as far as their career choice is so rewarding,” she said. “I am glad this was able to happen for them.”
