Snow moves on, but cold moves in
Most of the heaviest snow has moved along, but frigid temperatures moved in overnight and blanketed the area in extreme cold. AccuWeather reports that temperatures are about 4 degrees above zero this morning, but wind chills are making it feel like it’s about 20 degrees colder.
A wind chill advisory is in effect until 10 a.m. because an arctic front moved in featuring gusty winds of 10 to 20 mph, the National Weather Service reported.
The winds are expected to move back to normal levels later this afternoon, and temperatures are expected to climb back to 10 degrees. However, the lingering winds will make temperatures feel like it’s still zero degrees.
Between 6-inches to 12-inches of new snow hit the ground during the storm last night, according to the Community Collaborative Rain Hail and Snow Network, which handles snow totals in the country.
O’Hare International Airport reportedly received 6-inches of snow overnight, while Palatine reported 11-inches of snow overnight. Roselle also picked up about 6-inches, while Mundelein recorded about 7-inches overnight,
The snow is causing longer than normal commutes into and out of the city, and people should give themselves extra time when heading to work this morning.
Metra is reporting on their website that, because of the hazardous weather outlook, some train delays could take place this morning.
