Hamfest to allow radio operators to shop and swap

Submitted by WCRA

The 47th annual Amateur Radio Mid-Winter Hamfest will open at 8 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, at Kane County Fairgrounds, 525 S. Randall Road in St. Charles.

It’s that time again when several thousand “Ham” radio operators will gather to shop and swap. Vendors will be selling new products, ranging from short wave radios, amplifiers, computers and antennas, to small parts. Also, many of the approximately 200 tables will offer used equipment and parts for antique radios up to the very latest advanced technical systems. Demonstrations will be provided. Plenty of expertise will be available to answer any questions you may have concerning any facet of amateur “Ham” radio.

The Wheaton Community Radio Amateurs Communications Support Unit will show the latest state-of-the-art technology in Amateur Radio Emergency portable communications equipment.

Three technical forums will be offered starting at 9:30, 10:30 and 11:30 a.m.

Volunteer Examiner (VE) testing will be offered to those who want to obtain or upgrade or obtain an amateur radio license.

In addition, the club will be offering classes on “How to Get your Ham Radio License”, starting in March.

Remember, you do not have to be an electrical engineer to join this hobby. Anyone can get a license. All it takes is an interest and enthusiasm to get on the air to start making contacts with other hams not only in the United States, but all over the world.

Admission is $10 per adult (free for kids 12 and under with paying adult, Boy/Girl Scout youth in uniform). For details, visit www.wheatonhamfest.org or call (630) 604-0157.
