Aurora driver charged in crash that killed Naperville bicyclist
The driver who struck and killed a Naperville bicyclist in September has been charged with aggravated driving under the influence of a controlled substance, police said Thursday.
Joshua R. Spuhler, 36, of Aurora, turned himself in to Naperville police Tuesday, when he posted the required $25,000 bond and was released, authorities said.
Spuhler is accused of hitting Shwuwei Yeh, 56, of Naperville, about 7:25 a.m. Sept. 25 while she was riding her bicycle across Diehl Road at the east side of its intersection with Freedom Drive.
Paramedics transported Yeh, who apparently was riding her bicycle to work at the time, to Edward Hospital in Naperville. She died from injuries she suffered when a gray 2006 Nissan Titan that police say Spuhler was driving struck her in the intersection.
Police did not specify which controlled substance Spuhler is accused of using before the crash.
Spuhler is scheduled to appear at 9 a.m. Monday, Feb. 10, in DuPage County court.
A so-called “Ghost Bike” has been placed on the south side of Diehl Road just east of Freedom Drive in Yeh’s honor. Ghost Bikes are painted white and installed as memorials near the scenes of accidents where bicyclists are hit or killed.
