Submitted by Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra
The Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra will host the third annual Faculty Benefit Recital from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5, in the Spartan Auditorium at Elgin Community College Arts Center, 1700 Spartan Drive in Elgin.
The concert is free, but tickets do need to be reserved in advance at tickets.elgin.edu or by calling (847) 622-0300. Donations to benefit the EYSO scholarship fund will be accepted at the concert.
For the third time in its 38-year history, the EYSO faculty and Chamber Music Institute coaches will take to the stage to perform together.
The past two recitals were a big hit and this year’s is sure to be the same. Audience members will enjoy an hour of exceptional music by professional musicians with truly impressive resumes. This is a rare opportunity to hear local world-class musicians play together.

EYSO is celebrating its 38th year with the 2013-14 season theme, “Bardology: Shakespeare, Musically Speaking Season.” It is a yearlong study of the genius and influence of William Shakespeare with some of the greatest works for orchestra ever written. The year will explore the many layers of Shakespeare through music inspired and informed by his canon.
The EYSO regular season includes nine concert performances at the Blizzard Theatre on the main campus of ECC. In addition, the Chamber Music Institute performs each semester, the Brass Choir performs every spring, and the EYSO honors chamber ensembles — the Maud Powell String Quartet, the Sterling Brass Quintet, and the Hanson String Quartet perform throughout the year.
The EYSO, an in-residence ensemble in the Arts Center at Elgin Community College, is home to five orchestras and a brass choir with 350 students from over 60 communities.
Founded in 1976, its mission is to create a community of young musicians, enriching their lives and the lives of their families, schools, communities and beyond, through the study and performance of excellent music. The EYSO is under the leadership of artistic director Randal Swiggum. This is his 16th season with the organization. The EYSO is partially supported by grants from the EFS Foundation, the Elgin Cultural Arts Commission, the Grand Victoria Foundation, the Hoffer Foundation, the Illinois Arts Council, and the Palmer Foundation.
