Side Street Studio Arts seeks interns

Side Street Studio Arts, downtown Elgin’s newest arts venue, is looking for artist interns to assist in their extensive event schedule and day-to-day activities and to teach in their arts workshops and camps. The internship experience will culminate in a solo exhibition or performance of each intern’s personal artistic practice in whichever medium they work.

It was founded in January 2013 by Tanner Melvin and Erin Rehberg in an effort to fill a niche in the Elgin arts scene. Currently under the direction of Amanda Harris, Melvin and Rehberg, its mission is to provide an accessible space encouraging all aspects of the artistic process from creation to curation.

The intern will assist in visual art exhibition installation and strike, as well as in live performance and event production. They will work with the directors on promotional and marketing campaigns and assist with outreach programs, including arts education and external productions. They will assist in the day-to-day operations of the storefront gallery/exhibition space and work on special projects directly related to their personal area of artistic experience. It will involve on-site working 10 hours per week. They will participate in workshops with the directors on various subjects related to their chosen field or medium of art, as well as learn the skills of running a small business and self promotion.

The qualifications needed:

Ÿ Strong interpersonal and communication skills

Ÿ Strong writing skills

Ÿ A commitment to the arts and arts education

Ÿ Honed personal artistic practice

Ÿ Knowledge of electronic communication i.e. emails, Google drive, phone apps, etc.

Ÿ Knowledge of social media marketing

Ÿ Positive attitude

It would be a plus, but not necessary, to have experience in website design and production, poster/marketing design and/or public relations.

In addition, this program will offer the interns the opportunity to network and learn from and work with a variety of professional artists; time and space to work on their personal art practice; and income potential through teaching in education and outreach programming. It will culminating in personal exhibition or performance at Side Street Studios.

Upon completion of the program, the intern will have use of Side Street Studio Arts for a week to curate a show, exhibit their own work and/or produce a performance.

Also include work sample, such as 5-10 digital files or links to works for visual artists; a DVD or CD cued to start or link to a 5-minute sample for performance, media or music artists; or five pages of work mailed or a digital file for writers.
