Residents gather to honor Sandy Hook shooting victims, families

Approximately 60 local residents gathered recently in downtown Arlington Heights at a vigil honoring the victims and their families on the anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy.

The ecumenical vigil featured a reading of the names of the 20 children and six adults who lost their lives that day, as well as prayers and song, including “26 Angels,” written and performed by Rosie Weiss, a eighth-grader at South Middle School.

Vigil participants were asked to perform an act of kindness that weekend in honor of those who died, and also to spend time in reflecting how the future can be made better for all persons.

The event was sponsored by the Gun Violence Conversation Group of Southminster Presbyterian Church.
