Culture Stock arranges family friendly events in Aurora

Culture Stock announces several events to keep adults and children alike entertained, educated and culturally aware this winter.

All events are free and run by L.I.F.T. Aurora, the nonprofit that also runs the bookstore, unless noted.

Culture Stock is at 43 E. Galena Blvd. in downtown Aurora. Store hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. For information on these free, community events, visit Culture Stock on Facebook.

Ÿ Join “Ballet Storytime” at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 2. This special storytime “Dance Your Winter Blues Away,” is complete with stories, a craft and dancing. Boys, girls and siblings are all welcome. Katie Bussell, who has done summer intensives with Joffrey and Hubbard Street, will be on hand to share her love of ballet and dance.

Ÿ At “M.U.S.I.C. Mondays” from 6 to 7 p.m., Musicians Unite to Serve Instrumentally in the Community (M.U.S.I.C.) brings great, local talent to Culture Stock every Monday night. The free, hourlong concerts feature popular musicians from throughout the Aurora area.

Ÿ On Wednesdays from 6 to 7 p.m., Aurora Language Table, an independent event hosted by Culture Stock, is an informal hour of conversations in both English and Spanish. It meets every Wednesday. For information, email Max Balding at maxbalding@gmail.com.

Ÿ Water Street Kids meets at 7 p.m. Thursdays in January. In “Water Street Kids: Dance!,” this monthlong dance workshop is for kids, age 5-8. Classes will be at 7 p.m. Thursdays and will end in a performance at the Chinese New Year event on Jan. 31. Sign up via the Facebook event.

Ÿ Water Street Writers meets at 1 p.m. Saturdays, Jan. 11 to Feb. 1. It is a four-week workshop that will guide kids through writing their own story. It is appropriate for ages 7-12. No fee for participation.

Ÿ At 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, join “C.S. Lewis Discussions,” a literary gathering focusing on C.S. Lewis, led by Amy Hughes, who has a Ph.D in historical theology from Wheaton College.

Ÿ Chinese New Year celebration will be at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31. Everyone is invited to celebrate the year of the horse at Culture Stock.

Founded by L.I.F.T. Aurora, Culture Stock operates as a hub for cultural activities and community programs while serving as a used book and media reseller, offering a full line of books, CDs, DVDs, vinyl records and more for adults and children. It is 100 percent operated by volunteers.
