Warren opens with Pontiac win; Grayslake C. falls downstate

Eric Gillespie scored 28 points, Adrian Deere added 22, and Warren’s boys basketball team opened the Pontiac Holiday Tournament with a 66-52 win over Plainfield North on Thursday night.

Warren led 12-10 after one quarter, 26-21 at halftime and 40-35 after three quarters. The Blue Devils then outscored the Tigers 26-17 in the fourth. Gillespie shot 8 of 11 from the floor, including 2 of 5 from three-point range, and went 10 of 10 from the foul line. He also dished out 4 assists. Deere was 7-of-14 shooting and 7 of 8 from the stripe, and he grabbed 9 rebounds. James Betori chipped in 9 points for Warren (5-5), which will play top-seeded Curie at 7:30 p.m. today.

Rock Island 58, Grayslake Central 52: At Illinois Wesleyan University’s Shirk Center, the Rams dropped their opening game in the State Farm Holiday Classic.

Grayslake Central (5-4) received double-digit points from Charlie Anderson (15), Alex Lennartz (12) and Malcolm Reed (10).

Rock Island, which was led by Keenan Shorters’s 20 points, led 17-9 after one quarter and 28-20 at halftime. Grayslake Central came back and took a 39-38 lead into the fourth, before getting outscored 20-13 in the final quarter.

Grayslake Central will play Thornwood at 2 p.m. today at Normal West.

Rockford Boylan 56, Lake Zurich 55: At Pekin, the Bears dropped their opening game in the tournament.

Lake Zurich will play Plainfield East at 2:15 p.m. today.
