Older, younger students team up on gingerbreak house projects at Rockland School
Students team up to build edible houses at Rockland School
First-graders armed with frosting, graham crackers and candy teamed up with their fifth-grade book buddies to make gingerbread houses at Rockland Elementary School in Libertyville.
Christmas music filled the classroom as kids worked diligently for about an hour to create their Christmas masterpieces.
“Students are encouraged to be as creative as they want when constructing their house and are able to bring them home at the end of the day,” first-grade teacher Jenae DeRue said of the project.
The buddy classes meet once a week to help the younger students with reading, academics and projects.
“The students love working together and it’s a great way for our older students to interact with the younger ones,” DeRue said.
