Sit ringside as mixologists from several suburban restaurants and bars compete in the Daily Herald's martini challenge from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, at Elk Grove Village's At The Post. Drink specials include $5 Tito's Handmade Vodka martinis and complimentary appetizers. Finalists compete for a $500 gift card and a media advertisement package.

Beer summit

Learn about holiday craft beers at this month's Beer Summit — an informal monthly meeting that combines learning about craft beer styles and varieties with samples and pizza. Tap into at least four different holiday brews beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, at Whirlyball in Vernon Hills and learn about the various spices that go into holiday craft brews. $20 per person payable at the door includes beer samples and pizza. Tavern '45 recently opened inside Brunswick's bowling alley and offers a full bar with an emphasis on local craft beer. Brews offered include Half Acre, Two Brothers, Revolution, Goose Island and Metropolitan. Try several kinds with a beer flight of four draft samples.
