Oh, for the days when Christmas followed Thanksgiving

Many years ago (perhaps 30) I was shopping in the now-defunct Karrol's Menswear (tall sizes) at Golf Mill Shopping Center. I had purchased a shirt for my husband and asked the salesman for a Christmas box. The date was Nov. 18 — I remember it well.

He looked at me kind of strange and said, “Lady, we don't have Christmas boxes yet.”

In those days there was a clear distinction between the holidays and it was still before Thanksgiving.

Sure, we would sometimes do a little shopping early as I was, but the stores didn't beat you over the head with Christmas carols over the speaker and holiday decorations in October! Oh, for the good old days.
