Lawmakers take no action on Office Depot tax deal
SPRINGFIELD — State lawmakers left the Capitol Tuesday without approving tax breaks for the new Office Depot Inc., raising questions about whether they’d be able to put a deal together to help keep offices in Naperville.
Office Depot was based in Florida and merged this year with Office Max, which was based in Naperville.
The new company is trying to pick a new headquarters, and lawmakers were considering offering tax incentives to give DuPage County the best shot it could.
The Illinois Senate Tuesday approved a 15-year, $53 million deal from state Sen. Tom Cullerton, a Villa Park Democrat. But the Illinois House didn’t take it up, so no proposal went to Gov. Pat Quinn.
Lawmakers aren’t scheduled to return to the Capitol until late January, and it’s unclear when Office Depot will pick a new headquarters.
