Rutherford: pension plan won’t hold up in court

SPRINGFIELD — Illinois Treasurer Dan Rutherford says he doesn’t support pension legislation that state lawmakers are set to consider this week.

In a statement Monday, the Republican candidate for governor says he doesn’t believe the proposal will “withstand judicial review” if it’s approved by the Legislature.

State Sen. Bill Brady is the only Republican running for governor to support the proposal. Venture capitalist Bruce Rauner (ROW’-nur) opposes it and state Sen. Kirk Dillard has said he wants additional hearings on the measure before deciding how to vote.

Gov. Pat Quinn and fellow Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tio Hardiman support the plan.

Legislative leaders announced some details of the deal last week that’s aimed aimed at solving the state’s nearly $100 billion pension crisis. It’s could save about $160 billion over three decades.
