Glen Crest 8th-graders become immigrants trying to get into U.S.

The entire eighth grade at Glen Crest Middle School in Glen Ellyn immersed themselves in an immigration experience that transformed them into desperate, anxious people from Europe and Asia pinning their hopes for survival on being admitted to the United States through Ellis Island.

The students arrived at school on Monday, November 25, dressed and transformed into the immigrant role they were given the week before.

Their Glen Crest identity disappeared and they literally became the person they were assigned.

Eighth grade social studies teachers, Pat Doyle and Kris Casey, coordinated the project with the help of other middle school teachers and administrators who served as Ellis Island officials.
