District 304 families invited to play chess

Submitted by Geneva Unit District 304

All Geneva Unit District 304 students and families are invited to Geneva High School on Tuesday, Dec. 3, for Family Chess Night.

Sponsored by the high school Chess Club, this fun opportunity for the whole family will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the cafeteria, 416 McKinley Ave.

Family Chess Night is for all ages and skill levels, and even those who have never played are invited to come and give chess a try. Several members of the Chess Club will be on hand to teach chess basics to anyone who needs a little help with the rules or wants some coaching.

“Chess is a lot of fun to play and it supports the cognitive development of elementary school aged students as they get to practice abstract thinking skills,” said Brian Schmidt, Geneva High School’s Chess Club sponsor. “Chess also provides competitive opportunities for students regardless of physical ability. Learning how to set goals, work a plan, execute, and win are important life-skills that chess provides a uniquely accessible opportunity to learn.”

Organizers will order pizzas during the event, and participants are asked to plan to share the cost if they plan to share the food.

“If all goes well and there is continued interest in doing this I hope to make Family Chess Night a regular event,” Schmidt said.

If your family plans to attend Dec. 3, email an RSVP to Brian Schmidt at bschmidt@geneva304.org.
