Beavers’ lawyers to ask judge to postpone jail

Former Cook County Commissioner William Beavers will learn Monday if a federal judge will grant his attorneys’ request to let the outspoken ex-politician remain out of jail while they appeal his tax evasion case.

WLS-TV reported that Beavers’ lawyers made the request on Thursday.

Without the reprieve, the 78-year-old who once described himself as a virile hog would have to report to jail by Dec. 2 to begin serving a six-month sentence.

Beavers was convicted in March of failing to declare campaign cash as income after he spent the money on slot machines.

Beavers’ lawyers say he’s not a flight risk.

After spending more than a quarter century as a leading Chicago Democrat, Beavers never testified at his sentencing hearing, declaring afterward: “I ain’t begging for nothing.”
