Work begins on Rosewood Beach improvements
Submitted by the Park District of Highland Park
Park District of Highland Park commissioners were joined by members of the Rosewood Beach Task Force for a sand breaking at Rosewood Beach on Oct. 22, officially marking the beginning of the park district’s beach improvement project.
The park district is constructing family changing rooms, outdoor showers, a concession stand, a lifeguard and first-aid station, and an interpretive center, all connected by a wooden boardwalk at the base of the bluff. Weather permitting, construction crews will work during the fall and winter months completing the project in June.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers beach restoration project is also expected to launch in 2014. The USACE is partnering with the Park District of Highland Park in this federally funded Great Lakes Fishery and Ecosystem Restoration project which includes replacing the existing steel groynes with stone and sheet pile breakwaters, stream daylighting, sand augmentation, native plantings, and bluff and ravine restoration.
A lakeside ceremony with USACE representatives will be announced prior to the start of the Rosewood Beach restoration project.
