Chicago might name cultural center after Daley’s mom

An effort is under way to name the Chicago Cultural Center after late first lady Eleanor “Sis” Daley.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Alderman Jim Balcer introduced legislation Wednesday at the request of the Daley family. Sis Daley was the wife of late Mayor Richard J. Daley and the mother of former Mayor Richard M. Daley. She was Chicago’s first lady for more than 20 years.

Balcer says she deserves the honor because she “played a great part in preserving the cultural center.”

The building was completed in 1897 as the city’s first central public library. It houses a large stained glass dome made by Tiffany. The building became the Chicago Cultural Center in 1991. Every year it hosts hundreds of artistic, musical and other cultural events.
