Lincoln, Gettysburg address to be remembered at concert

In honor of the upcoming 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, the Elgin Choral Union will present “Long-Remembered: A Tribute to Lincoln’s Life and Times” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, in the Blizzard Theatre at Elgin Community College Arts Center, 1700 Spartan Drive.
The Elgin Choral Union, with the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra and Barrington Children’s Choir, will commemorate the 150th anniversary of the famous Gettysburg Address with a musical program in the spirit of Lincoln’s vision to create a democratic nation committed to liberty and equality. Lincoln gave the speech Nov. 19, 1863, at the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Penn.
Reflecting a complexity of concepts through a performance of the “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” Aaron Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man,” Vaughan Williams’ “Dona nobis pacem” set to Civil War poetry by Walt Whitman. In addition, there will be an appearance by Elgin Mayor David Kaptain.

Tickets are $23, $18 for seniors, $15 for students and $5 for children (with the purchase of an adult or senior admission). All ticket prices include a $1 per ticket Arts Center surcharge. Group rates are available; call the ECU office at (847) 214-7225 for details.
Purchase a two-concert subscription for $40, $30 for seniors, and $26 for students. The next concert will be “Beethoven & Mozart: Music of the Masters” on May 9. The ECU also will perform with the Elgin Symphony Orchestra for “Magical Holiday Concerts” on Saturday, Dec. 14 and Sunday, Dec. 15, and “Beethoven Inspires: Beethoven and Cherubini” on March 8-9.
