Kankakee County opens special veterans court

KANKAKEE — Kankakee County has opened a special court program for veterans.

The county accepted its first defendant on Tuesday. The Daily Journal reports that the program is one of nearly 170 across the country. It offers second chances to veterans and active-duty military members who have addiction or mental-health issues. It’s similar to special courts for drugs or domestic violence.

Defendants must meet regularly with probation officers and attend treatment programs.

Michael Roof is superintendent of the Veterans Assistance Commission of Kankakee County. He describes it as an “emotionally driven court.” Kankakee County prosecutor Jamie Boyd says the court provides necessary services for veterans.
