Grants awarded to schools for fighting drug abuse

Lake County State’s Attorney Michael G. Nerheim announced that he has awarded grants to several schools that are committed to fighting drug abuse in the Lake County Schools. Funds were approved and distributed to the following schools:

Ÿ Lotus Elementary School

Ÿ Gavin Central School

Ÿ Gavin South Junior High School

Ÿ Stanton School

Ÿ Miguel Juarez Middle School

Ÿ Zion-Benton High School

The grant money was presented to the schools at the annual Red Ribbon Rally, held on Oct. 29, at the College of Lake County.

The money for these grants has been obtained by the state’s attorney’s office from property forfeited from drug dealers in Lake County. Under Illinois law, the state’s attorney has broad discretion in the use of such funds, as long as the money is spent to further anti-drug programs.

Nerheim stated that funds in the amount of $136,182 have been given out since the program’s inception and that the program will continue.
