Lake Villa teen to hold fundraiser for Diveheart Nov. 9

Sixteen-year old Evelyn Felipez of Lake Villa is holding a fundraiser to benefit an organization that has helped her feel independent and self-confident. Evelyn, who has spina bifida, has mobility challenges on land. Scuba diving with Diveheart has provided her with a sense of freedom and adventure. On November 9th, Evelyn will hold a fundraiser dinner for her Gold Award Project for Girl Scouts. Proceeds from the event will benefit Diveheart.

Diveheart, which is located in Downers Grove, Illinois, offers scuba diving opportunities and instruction to children, adults and veterans with disabilities. Evelyn was introduced to Diveheart through the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. “Diveheart welcomed all of us with open arms. Because of Diveheart, I learned to scuba dive, something that I never imagined I would do. I traveled to the Florida Keys with Diveheart and went scuba diving in the ocean, and also dove in the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta with whale sharks,” said Evelyn. “Diveheart has changed the lives of many people with disabilities. They learn that they are capable of doing anything that they sent their minds to. Diveheart helps people with disabilities by encouraging them to do something that is truly amazing. Because of this, I decided that I wanted to help Diveheart by sponsoring this fundraiser.”

In addition to scuba diving, Evelyn competes in wheelchair track and field, participates in judo and archery, and plays violin. She is also a Girl Scout with Troop 40973 in Antioch.

Evelyn's fundraiser will be a spaghetti dinner on Saturday, November 9th at N&T's Family Restaurant, 2711 Sheridan Road in Zion, IL. The price is $10/person for dinner, beverage and dessert. For additional information contact felipez@sbcglobal.net
