Hoffman Estates to provide energy assessments to homeowners

The village of Hoffman Estates is offering voluntary energy assessments for single-family homes older than 1995. A home energy assessment is often the first step in making your home more efficient. The assessment will help determine how to improve your home’s energy use, which will save you money.

Through a federal grant, Hoffman Estates has been able to train inspectors to become certified energy analysts, and to purchase the equipment necessary to conduct energy assessments. An assessment typically consists of a computer operated blower door test (home air-leakage measurement) to determine areas of energy losses and personalized money-saving recommendations.

For a limited time, these assessments are being offered at a reduced rate from the normal cost. The cost for the assessment is $100, with $50 rebated if any of the recommended improvements are completed. The average cost of an energy assessment/audit by an independent, third-party agency would normally be $650 to $800.

The assessment takes about two hours to complete.
