Turn in your prescription drugs to Campton Hills police
Submitted by Campton Hills Police Department
The Campton Hills Police Department will again partner with the Drug Enforcement Administration Saturday, Oct. 26, for their Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.
Campton Hills residents can drop their prescription drugs off from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the village hall, 40W270 La Fox Road, Suite B, Campton Hills.
This initiative addresses vital public safety and public health issues. More than 7 million Americans abuse prescription drugs, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health.
And every day, on average, 2,500 teens use them to get high for the first time, according to the Partnership for a Drug-Free America.
Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. Additionally, the Take-Back Day reduces the risk of prescription drugs entering the water, potentially harming aquatic life or getting into a human water supply.
On April 27, 2013, 371 tons of prescription medications were collected from members of the public at more than 5,829 locations manned by 4,312 state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies that partnered with DEA on the event.
When added to the collections from DEA’s previous five Take-Back events, more than 1,409 tons of prescription medications have been removed from circulation.
All prescription and nonprescription substances will be collected. All solid dosage pharmaceutical product and liquids in consumer containers will be accepted. Liquid products should remain sealed in their original container.
Participants are strongly encouraged to remove any identifying personal information from the prescription label. The program is completely anonymous and no questions or requests for identification will be made.
Destruction of the materials will be accomplished in accordance with all applicable federal and state laws and regulations.
Illicit substances such as marijuana, methamphetamines and cocaine are not part of this initiative and will not be collected by the Campton Hills Police Department. Additionally, intravenous solutions, injectables and syringes will not be accepted due to potential hazard posed by blood-borne pathogens.
