West Aurora teams to raise money for breast cancer research
Submitted by Aurora School District 129
West Aurora High School students and staff will raise funds for research in the fight against breast cancer at two events in October — “Volley for the Cure” and “Score for the Cause.”
The West Aurora and Wheaton North girls volleyball teams will raise research funds at their Thursday, Oct. 17, competition. The junior varsity and varsity teams play from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the West gymnasium, 1201 W. New York St., Aurora.
Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students. No cost for individuals wearing pink.
The team would like to recognize cancer survivors who are present that evening. Survivors who plan to attend and would like to be recognized can contact Coach Kari Nicholson at knicholson@sd129.org with their names and number of years they have been survivors.
The evening also will include performances by the step team, cheerleaders, poms and the pep band. Visitors will have an opportunity to participate in raffles and silent auctions.
The team will sell white and hot pink T-shirts for $10. Individuals who are interested in purchasing shirts can email Coach Nicholson, knicholson@sd129.org, with their shirt sizes. The team is hoping that everyone who attends wears white or pink.
Another fundraising event, “Score for the Cause,” will occur at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 18, in the football stadium during the game against Naperville North. Football players will be going through the stands collecting for donations for Breast Cancer Research.
Individuals who would like to volunteer to help at either the Oct. 17 or 18 events can contact Coach Nicholson.
Those who would like to donate to breast cancer cure research online can visit www.sd129.org for the event information. To donate by mail, send a check made payable to the American Cancer Society and to Volley for the Cure/Score for the Cause, c/o West High School, 1201 W. New York St., Aurora, IL 60506.
