Schools needed for recovering drug users
I want to thank the Daily Herald for focusing on the problems of addition, especially the heroin epidemic that has damaged lives and families and communities. Last night I viewed a film, “The Anonymous People,” at the Des Plaines Theatre. The film points to the stigma of alcohol and drug use that continues to hold people in shame, for a disease they did not choose. It is crucial that we rise our awareness of this misunderstood disease and support persons and families rather than judge them as “lesser than.”
One point the movie shared is the need for “recovery high schools.” Across the nation there are schools that are committed to helping students in recovery. Think about it, we send our kids to treatment and then put them back into the very environment that triggers their drug use.
