Sprague School celebrates diversity with Multicultural Fair

At Laura B. Sprague School, second-graders explored and celebrated diversity at their recent Multicultural Fair.

In addition to English, nearly half of Sprague students live in homes where other languages are spoken. Students in second grade experience a social studies unit titled “Discovering Diversity Within Our Community.”

According to Principal Christy Adler, core learning experiences for the students include:

Ÿ Reading maps and identifying where families originated.

Ÿ Creating a collage illustrating the similarities and differences across cultures.

Ÿ Using the book “What the World Eats” to discuss, compare, and contrast not only the types of food people eat, but also the needs and wants of difference cultures.

“At Sprague School, we celebrate diversity as we discover the similarities and differences among our school community,” Adler said.

Second-graders and their families share with each other the unique characteristics of their cultures in the areas of food, music, clothing, language, games, and basic ways of life.
