Buffalo Grove High School stages “Romeo and Juliet”

Shakespeare’s timeless tale of young love and the tragic consequences of misunderstanding and bias comes to life in Buffalo Grove High School’s fall production of “Romeo and Juliet.” The play takes the stage in the school’s Miller Theater Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 17-19. Thursday’s curtain rises at 7 p.m.; the other nights’ performances begin at 7:30 p.m.

Director Beth Wells describes Shakespeare as a writer of “forever stories,” who continues to be relevant through the ages and translates well to different times and places. This exciting modern adaptation of “Romeo and Juliet” by Greg Banks is set in urban America and will especially resonate with a young, contemporary audience. The two young lovers’ families are powerful and well connected, but despise one another and resolve to keep the pair apart.

“The students have created an original sound track for the show and the cast has been working with a professional stage combat director,” said Wells, offering a sneak peek into the new and creative staging of the classic play.

Romeo (Cole Festenstein) and Juliet (Elizabeth Clary) are joined by the following cast members: Dylan DeWitt, Milan Babic, Domingo Morales, Zoey Allan, Brian Lynch, Jeremy Hamburger, Cami Reir, George Ayoub, Shannon Brennan, Serena Clearwater, Mia Connery, Cassie Deck, Kristina Dominguez, Emilia Kluz, Josh Levinson, and Payton Lira.

The following production staff members work with director Wells: Edward Moon (scenic designer and technical director), Debbie Andres (makeup and costume coordinator), Ross Frawley (stage combat choreographer), and Betsy Ludemann (house manager).

Admission is $5 at the door. For information, call (847) 718-4000.
