Audition for Elgin Theatre Company's “Men Are Dogs”

Submitted by Elgin Theatre Company

Elgin Theatre Company will hold auditions for “Men Are Dogs,” a comedy by Joe Simonelli and directed by Linda Collins.

Auditions are scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday, Oct. 13-14, at the offices of the Downtown Neighborhood Association of Elgin at 2 Douglas Ave. The office is on the corner where Douglas Avenue meets Chicago Street in Elgin.

Cecilia Monahan is a successful — albeit unorthodox — psychologist who runs a support group for single and divorced women. Yet she has man troubles of her own. Her oft-betrothed mother is constantly nagging her about remarrying. But it's her ensemble of neurotic patients who provide the hilarity in this delightful comedy — action that usually consists of unbridled rage directed frequently and forcefully toward the hapless actor who stands in for insensitive males during the role-playing sessions.

Participants must prepare a monologue that will show their ability. Comedy is preferred but required.

Cast needed are two men, six women plus extras.

• Cecelia, age 38 to 48. A no-nonsense psychologist who deals with the relationship issues of her clients while ignoring her own.

• Rose, age commensurate to daughter Cecelia's. Cecelia's wisecracking live-in mom who offers her daughter unsolicited dating advice.

• Bob, age 40 to 50. The substitute postal worker who strikes up a relationship with Cecelia.

• Tony, age 30 to 50. A pompous actor who is hired by Cecelia to assist in her therapeutic role-playing sessions.

• Allison, age 25 to 35. A hairdresser and the latest addition to Cecelia's therapy group.

• Madeleine, Jane, and Loretta, any age. Participants in Cecelia's therapy group.

The performances will be Jan. 10-26 at the Kimball Street Theater, 261 Dundee Ave in Elgin.

They also need a stage manager, backstage assistants, and set builders
