Elk Grove church sewers send handmade quilts worldwide

Since the late 1970s, Christus Victor Lutheran Church, 1045 S. Arlington Heights Road, Elk Grove Village, has been making quilts for Lutheran World Relief. Some of the sewing is done in homes, but a small group meets every Monday afternoon, at the church, to sew and assemble the patchwork tops with batting and sheet backs.

Every September, the quilts are boxed up and sent to Lutheran World Relief, along with boxes of health kits (toiletries, hand towel and wash cloths), school kits (school supplies in a cloth school bag), and dress kits (three yards of fabric, thread and needles), to be sent all over the world where needed.

As a celebration of the Blessing of the Quilts, the church displays the colorful array of these life saving quilts so everyone can see what their donations of fabric and time have become. This year, 128 works of art will become someone’s home, someone’s comfort, someone’s hope.

The church is always looking for more people who can sew, cut fabric or help assemble, to join them in this mission. For information, contact the church office at (847) 437-2666.

In 2012, Lutheran World Relief collected and distributed 412,710 quilts worldwide. This year, they have started a program of bar coding each one so they can trace where the quilts go into the world.
