‘Walking Dead’ actor expected at Rolling Meadows 5K - with a zombie twist

For experienced runners, a 5K is little more than a routine walk in the park.

But in Rolling Meadows on Saturday, participants in the 5K Zombie Challenge will be running for their figurative lives.

The event, which also features an appearance by “Walking Dead” actor Lew Temple, challenges runners to avoid pursuing zombies while navigating obstacles over a 3.1-mile course.

Zombies will be trying to steal participants’ “runner flags.” Runners who lose all their flags will be removed from the race and join the undead.

The run starts at 10 a.m. Saturday at Community Center Park, 3000 Central Road in Rolling Meadows. Registration can be done on site or online at www.the-running-dead.com.

Organizers say proceeds from the event will benefit the Emily Ann Holum Fund, created in memory of a 6-year-old Arlington Heights girl who inspired many during a courageous battle with leukemia.

After the race there will be music, food and beer, as well as a face painter for kids. A baggo tournament will be held and magician Paul Lee will perform at 4 p.m.

Temple, a leukemia survivor best known for playing prison inmate Axel during the third season of “The Walking Dead” will be there from about noon to 6 p.m.

Temple’s Hollywood credits also include “The Lone Ranger” and “Unstoppable.”

After about 5 p.m. a “Rock the Park” festival begins featuring music, karaoke, food and drink. for more information, visit www.the-running-dead.com.
